Cayucas: High School Lover

Zach Yudin first recorded under the name Oregon Bike Trails before recruiting his twin brother Ben Yudin, Banah Winn, Casey Wojtalewicz plus Christian Koons and taking the name Cayucas after the small surf town of Cayacos on the California coast, halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Last fall the Santa Monica band was signed to U.S. label Secretly Canadian which will release their debut album 'Bigfoot' April 30.  The first single "High School Lover" is The Beach Boys updated for the 21st century and makes for a perfect summertime soundtrack.

A string of shows are scheduled between May and August, most of them in North America, but there will be a few in the U.K. and continental Europe as well.

Info for readers in the Los Angeles area:  the band will be doing a free gig at 7 pm this Tuesday, April 30 at the Origami vinyl record shop in Echo Park.

Lana Del Rey: Young And Beautiful (The Great Gatsby soundtrack)

Co-written with director Baz Luhrmann, Lana Del Rey's "Young and Beautiful" is the hands down best song on The Great Gatsby soundtrack: lush, haunting, and with lyrics that manage to perfectly compliment what promises to be a bold new adaptation of perhaps the finest American novel of the 20th century, published in 1925 and the most famous work of F. Scott Fitzgerald.

The film premieres May 10; it also opens this year's Cannes Film Festival which runs May 15-26.  The soundtrack, executive-produced by Jay-Z, will be released May 7.

Most likely a video befitting this gorgeous track is just around the corner. While we wait, thankfully there is the audio for us to enjoy....over and over and over again.

UPDATE, MAY 10:

The video was uploaded to the web today to coincide with the film's wide release.  Lana Del Rey looks as glamorous as ever in the clip shot by directors Chris Sweeney and Sophie Muller who have partly found inspiration in the segments from Disney's original 1940 Fantasia in which Leopold Stokowski is seen conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Miguel: Adorn & How Many Drinks? (SNL) + Candles In The Sun + NPR Tiny Desk Concert

Miguel released his second full-length album 'Kaleidoscope Dream' last September.  No overnight success, the 26-year-old San Pedro, L.A. native has been writing song since he was 14, but he has finally and truly arrived this year, as evidenced on April 13 when he and his stellar band brought the house down on Saturday Night Live with flawless performances of "Adorn" and "How Many Drinks?".

Invited to do three songs for National Public Radio's Tiny Desk Concert series late last year, he solidly proved to be as comfortable in an small unplugged setting as he is in a big plugged-in one: together with his regular guitarist Dru DeCaro, Miguel performed "Do You", "The Thrill" and "Adorn".

This extraordinarily gifted vocalist is a born entertainer: confident but not arrogant with a natural charisma that is also used to great effect in videos, including his latest clip which features striking black/white images befitting of the powerful track 'Candles in the Sun'.

He'll be opening for Alica Keys on her Set the World on Fire U.S./UK/Europe tour between April 17 and June 24, and also has several festival gigs and headlining shows scheduled between April 18 and August 30:

Sebastian Lind: Fake

One of Denmark's finest voices, singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/producer Sebastian Lind released his second full-length album 'Happy Messed Up Kid' in February.

The playful video for 'Fake' is simple, yet effective and a perfect example that less is sometimes more.

Following a Danish tour that ends May 4, he will be playing eight shows in Germany May 6-14:

I've been a big fan since coming across his stellar track "Wait and See" which I posted in January of 2011; the animated video also remains one of my favorites:

Outlandish: A Mind Full Of Whispers

"A Mind Full of Whispers" is the latest striking video from Danish trio Outlandish, and like the clip that accompanied the title track from their 2012 album 'Warrior/Worrier' it was directed by Martin Skovbjerg.

They did four shows around Denmark last month; hopefully Isam Bachiri, Waqas Qadri, and Lenny Martinez have plans for additional gigs in the summer and fall.
